SF UNITY Community Outreach
Our mission is to be able to foster an environment for youth that emphasizes teamwork and collaboration. We want to unite different kids from diverse communities across the Bay Area through the wonderful world of STEAM. We empower the next generation of independent thinkers by teaching them not only technical skills but also how to approach problems with growth mindsets.

In our second season, we strengthened our partnership with the Don Fisher Boys & Girls Club by teaching elementary and middle school students the principles of design through TinkerCad. This year, we introduced a new initiative focused on CAD and design thinking to engage new middle schoolers in the design process. We guided them in using TinkerCad, 3D printed their ideas, and brought the final products back to showcase their work.
Our goal was to provide a hands-on design experience supported by a strong 1-to-1 ratio of team members to attendees. This approach had a significant impact, highlighted by one attendee who designed and 3D printed a phone case for a team member whose case had broken. This project encouraged students to identify real-life problems around them and solve them using CAD.
In addition to providing hands-on STEAM experiences, we aimed to empower attendees to change the way they approach problems. We wanted to inspire curiosity about how they can positively impact the lives of those around them.

Description During our rookie season, we partnered with the Don Fisher Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco and designed our robotics program for their youth members. Our goal was to embody the ideals of FIRST with impact and teamwork, so we created a competition similar to FIRST competitions for the children of the Boys and Girls Club using Lego Mindstorms. We taught students the basics of engineering and problem-solving through the use of Lego.
